When is It Hot Enough for a Synthetic Oil?

“My supplier is pushing hard to move his synthetic gear oils into my operation. His position is that the units run too hot for long-term use of mineral oils. At what temperature should I switch to a Synthetic Oil lubricant for a non-circulated gearbox?”

First, the term synthetic is very broad, so we assume you are referring to lubricants that are formulated using polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic oil base.

There is no single temperature point that dictates a time to move to synthetics. The decision is dependent on equipment continuous loads and shock loads, equipment availability for routine maintenance, criticality of the application, component life cycles, lubricant life cycles and failure modes among other things.

Generally, the rate of lubricant degradation doubles with every 18 degrees F increase in temperature. Once formulated with antioxidant additives, PAO-based lubricants have a lower baseline rate of oxidative degradation. At low temperatures, a PAO’s increased oxidative life may not be noticeable, particularly if you have to change the oil at some point for other reasons. At higher temperatures, the synthetic may last noticeably longer.

Typically, you begin to notice the extra life provided by a PAO synthetic oil above 160 degrees F. If it is above 180 degrees F, and especially 200 degrees F, the difference in oxidative life becomes quite apparent. However, the point at which a change to synthetic is justified is dependent perhaps on a handful of additional “program management” parameters such as:

1. Do you intend to run your gear oils with an appropriate use of filtration and oil analysis to support life-cycle extensions for many years?

2. Are you currently doing oil analysis and performing condition-based changes?

3. Do you have, and have you communicated to your lab, oxidation limits that flag impending oxidation problems?

4. Does the machine’s operating temperature vary a great deal (a PAO’s high viscosity index enables it to operate across a wider temperature range)?

5. Do you have an effective contamination control program in place that will enable you to fully exploit the PAO’s extended life?

With the appropriate management strategy, a change to a high-performance product can actually cost considerably less than the equivalent mineral oil product type. Outside of these considerations, somewhere around 165 degrees F represents the point at which you probably should begin to consider the use of synthetics for the sake of lubricant longevity, if not for the sake of reliability.

Many truck and SUV owners personalize their vehicles with aftermarket products such as lift kits, tires and rims, custom grills, paint, wheel well flairs and engine upgrades. While these upgrades and accessories can increase engine performance and add plenty of visual appeal, they do nothing for extending drivetrain life like synthetic gear oil can do.  Most people perform proper engine maintenance and change their engine oil on a regular basis, but according to one quick lube business, only about two percent of its customers purchase differential gear lube changes. Even fewer change to synthetic gear oil. Sometimes this out of sight, out of mind differential neglect results in costly gear failure, leaving the motorist stranded on the highway.

There are two basic ways to change differential gear lube to synthetic gear oil. The old fluid may be drained or suctioned out and the differential refilled with new gear lube, or the differential cover may be removed to allow more of the old gear lube to drain out and allow access to the magnet inside the differential. Unlike engines, differentials are not equipped with filters. Instead, magnets that are open to the entire gear lube sump are used to catch some of the metal wear particles. When changing differential fluid, the magnet should be cleaned to ensure the new gear lube does not
become contaminated.

After draining the old fluid and cleaning the magnet, the differential cover should be re-installed and the differential filled with the correct viscosity grade of AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR® Synthetic Gear Lube. The use of cleaning solvents is not recommended. Initial differential oil changes are recommended by some manufacturers after the first 500 to

Even when vehicle manufacturers do not specify to change the factory-fill gear lube to remove wear particles, it is a
good practice to do so. For optimum gear and bearing life, AMSOIL recommends the factory-fill differential gear lube
be changed no later than the first 5,000 miles with new or rebuilt gears, followed by 50,000 mile drain intervals in
severe service or 100,000 mile drain intervals in normal service when using AMSOIL synthetic gear lubes.

America’s largest off-road racing series will once again kick off its 13-round schedule at Westgate River Ranch Resort in River Ranch, Fla., coinciding with Daytona Bike Week March 10-13.

Highlighting the 2012 calendar is the addition of three all-new GNCC Racing venues in Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia-giving racers the opportunity to compete on fresh soil next season.

“We’re really excited to introduce three new venues to the GNCC Racing schedule next year,” said GNCC Trail Boss, Jeff Russell. “Since the Loretta’s GNCC, we’ve been traveling all over to find new GNCC Racing venues for our GNCC Racers and I think the fresh trail and new scenery will add a whole new level of excitement for everyone.”

The series returns to many GNCC favorites in 2012, including Snowshoe Resort, Unadilla MX, Ironman and Loretta Lynn’s, which will once again serve as the season finale.

A special weekend GNCC Racing format will take place at Loretta Lynn Ranch in November, in order to accommodate the 2012 ISDE and National Enduro schedules. Motorcycles will compete throughout the day on Saturday and ATV racing will follow on Sunday-atypical from the other 12 rounds of racing where ATVs compete on Saturday and motorcycles on Sunday.

How GNCC Racing Works

Six races are held each weekend. Each race contains several classes, with each class separated into separate starting-line rows that begin one minute apart. On ATV day, Youth riders aged 6 – 15 race for one hour starting at 8 a.m. A two-hour race for the Women, Utility, Super Senior and Novice classes starts at 10 a.m., and then the Pro, Pro Am, A and B riders race at 1 p.m. On Bike days, Youth riders aged 7 – 15 race for 90 minutes at 8 a.m.; Women, Super Senior and Novice riders race for two hours at 10 a.m.; and the Pro, A and B riders race for three hours starting at 1 p.m.

Each GNCC Racing class is scored separately using a computerized transponder scoring.

GNCC courses usually run between 10 and 12 miles long for adult classes and 3-5 miles for youth.

Over 1500 GNCC Racing riders will compete during a GNCC weekend, and they hail from all 50 states, as well as Europe, Asia and Australia.

The top pro racers make a lucrative living racing the series thanks to prize money and sponsorship endorsements. Racing is a full-time job for a GNCC championship contender.

The AMA/ATVA-sanctioned Grand National Cross Country series is America’s premier off-road racing series. The 13-round race series stretches through the eastern US, starting with the season-opener in Florida in March and concluding with the season-finale in Indiana in October. What started out as a simple idea among three of North America’s most hard-core anglers is reaching a true milestone in 2012. Professional anglers Keith Kavajecz (Kaukauna, Wisc.), Pete Maina (Hayward, Wisc.) and Gary Parsons (Glidden, Wisc.) first toyed with the idea of producing their own TV fishing show over a decade ago. The show would be focused on their favorite fish species, Walleye, Muskie and Pike; Fish with Teeth! Pete Maina recalls; “We discussed what would make a great and successful TV show and wanted it to have a very unique format, one that every angler, from beginner to fanatic, would appreciate and enjoy.”

The formula seems to have worked, as their show, The Next Bite, is getting ready to begin its eighth season on the air.

Maina continues, “It started with three individual fishing personalities with differing specialties. We wanted hard core info, real fish catching with the whole story surrounding that success and effort. And it had to be FUN; something that anglers everywhere could relate to.”

And relate they have. The show’s popularity has gained momentum each and every year. Keeping it “Fun” is important, as Kavajecz often stresses, but it’s the high level of education the TNB crew brings to their audience that brings them back week after week.

“Although I fish tournaments for a living,” says Kavajecz, ”hosting The Next Bite show allows me to really get into the details of fishing for walleyes in different locations. All of us try to not only catch fish but then educate the audience so they can go out and be more successful on the water.”

Gary Parsons has been teaching other anglers how to catch walleyes most of his adult life. In his opinion, what makes The Next Bite show so successful is, that “we try to fish in lakes and rivers that relate to everyday fishermen and women.  One week we may be on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, the next trolling muskies on the St. Lawrence River, but in every location we talk technique… so our viewers leave their chairs with a little better understanding of how to get their Next Bite.”

No doubt the highlight of Season 8 for The Next Bite fans will be the show’s 100th episode, scheduled to air the week of February 20. This will be only the second episode in the show’s history that all three TNB crew members will be sharing a boat at the same time, the first time being the very first episode to air back in 2005. The 100th episode will feature some of the crews favorite moments from the past seven seasons.

The Next Bite airs on the NBC Sports Network (formerly the Versus Network) during the NBC Sports Outdoors block, Tuesdays at 1:00 PM ET and again on Thursdays at 10:00 AM ET beginning December 27, 2011. It can also be seen on WFN (World Fishing Network).

TRAXXAS TORC - The Off-Road Championship Series

After a successful 2011 campaign that brought off-road racing to three new venues, the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL has set the course for 2012.

The seven weekend, 14-race season will start where it ended in 2011.  A purpose-built track at Cycle Ranch in Floresville, Texas will host the first two rounds of racing April 28-29.  Just 30-minutes from downtown San Antonio, Cycle Ranch offered up one of the most technical race tracks on the circuit this past season.

A return to Red Bud MX in Buchanan, Mich. is on tap for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, May 26-27.  Despite heavy rains and knee-deep mud, the Red Bud faithful saw some of the most extreme off-road racing this year as the TORC series started at the famed motocross facility.

Big market, NASCAR venues in Chicago and Charlotte are mid-season highlights for the premier off-road, short course series.  TORC invades NASCAR country July 13-14 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. it will be a quick turnaround for the teams less than one week later in Joliet, Ill. at Chicagoland Speedway for a Thursday-Friday event.

Historical venues Crandon International Raceway and Bark River International Raceway round out the new schedule.  The series returns to its traditional ending in Crandon, Wis. on Labor Day weekend.  The final race of the year will be the AMSOIL Cup on Sunday, September 2.

To determine the fuel economy benefits of its synthetic lubricants, Amsoil conducted the industry-standard SAE J1321 In-Service Fuel Economy Test Procedure.
First, the baseline rate of fuel consumption was determined for two nearly identical Kenworth® T800B diesel trucks and 53’ trailers from Ford® Motor Company’s* Rawsonville, MI fleet. Texaco brand conventional lubricants were installed in each vehicle’s engine, transmission, and front and rear differentials. Both trucks simultaneously completed runs on a 40-mile test route representative of real-world driving conditions beginning and ending at Ford’s Rawsonville fleet maintenance facility.
Fuel consumption was recorded from each vehicle’s engine control module (ECM)
following each run. Although both vehicles were operated using the same conventional
lubricants and according to the same procedures, the test truck consumed an average
of 0.37 more gallons of fuel per run compared to the control truck.

The test truck alone was then thoroughly flushed of its conventional lubricants prior to
installing AMSOIL synthetic lubricants. Both trucks simultaneously completed runs on
the test route according to the same procedures used during the baseline segment. Fuel
consumption data was again recorded from the ECMs. The switch to AMSOIL synthetic
lubricants eliminated the 0.37-gallon difference in fuel consumption per baseline
segment run, resulting in 6.54 percent improved fuel economy.
