For $6 million, it’s Amsoil Arena

Duluth’s new arena will be named Amsoil Arena.

Amsoil, the Superior-based maker of synthetic motor oil, will pay $6 million over 20 years for the right to name the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center’s new arena.

“We approached Amsoil very informally,” said DECC Executive Director Dan Russell. “Their response was, ‘We’ll listen to anything,’ and — bingo.”

Russell made his comment immediately following a DECC Authority meeting this morning at which board members unanimously approved the tentative agreement.

The agreement was publicly announced at an 11 a.m. news conference in the still-under-construction arena. During the event Albert J. Amatuzio — Amsoil’s founder, president and CEO — said he was “very happy to be here.”

“I didn’t realize I would be paying this much money,” he joked.

Under the agreement, Amsoil will pay $2 million upon signing. That will help the DECC build up its reserves, Russell told board members. In exchange for the money, Amsoil will get an external sign on the building, on-ice advertising, the use of a suite, 12 tickets and six parking passes.

Russell told board members there are a couple outstanding issues to be resolved, including getting city permission for the sign and permission from the state of Minnesota.

Board member and UMD vice chancellor of finance and operations Greg Fox noted that the amount of the agreement covers almost 13 years of the DECC’s bond obligation for the arena.

This is not the first time Amsoil has bought the naming rights for a local event or attraction. The annual snocross event at Spirit Mountain is named the Amsoil Duluth National Snocross.

Construction on the $70 million arena began in April 2009. The arena will include 6,700 seats and an NHL-sized ice sheet. The University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team will play North Dakota on Dec. 30 in the arena’s first game.

Amatuzio, 86, was born, raised and lives in Duluth. He played college hockey at Duluth Junior College and at what would become the University of Minnesota Duluth. He admits, however, that he doesn’t attend many Bulldogs games.

“Too busy,” he said.

Amatuzio served 25 years in the Air Guard as a jet fighter pilot. He founded Amsoil after retiring from the military and after observing characteristics of synthetic oil in jet engines — reduced engine wear, good performance in extreme temperatures and long life. He thought that synthetic oil also could be used in automobiles. The first can of Amsoil 10W-40 appeared on the market in 1972.

Amatuzio has received numerous awards since founding Amsoil. He was inducted into the Superior Business Hall of Fame last year.

“Amsoil has done things at the DECC since I’ve been here,” Russell told board members. “They are great customers of ours.”

Is Synthetic Oil More Eco-Friendly than Regular Oil? – carsdirect.com

Synthetic Oil: More Eco-friendly?

Well, in a word, yes synthetic oil IS more eco-friendly and I’ll explain why. There are several articles circulating on the internet that dismiss the advantage of using synthetic oil to minimize your impact on the environment.

While it is true that used synthetic oil, if improperly disposed of, is just as damaging as any oil, there are advantages of using synthetic oils.

Synthetic Oil and extended drain intervals greatly reduce your output of used oil.

Big traditional oil companies are the main proponents of 3,000 mile oil changes. The reason is simple; they sell more oil that way. However, this also creates a huge amount of used oil, much of which is not properly disposed of. It’s estimated that unnecessary oil changes create an extra 300 – 400 MILLION gallons of used oil a year, costing consumers around 1.5 BILLION dollars a year.

Lets do some simple math; assume a average car, driving 15,000 miles a year. For the sake of discussion, let’s assume it takes 6 quarts of oil to change oil. Now, with a 3,000 mile oil change, that’s 5 oil changes a year. That means you will create 5×6 quarts of used oil per year, meaning 30 quarts a year. That’s 7 1/2 gallons a year. Now, if you used an extended drain oil from Amsoil like  0W-30 Signature Series, you would only change oil once a year, creating 1 1/2 gallons of used oil.

So we can see that moving to a quality synthetic oil like Amsoil can reduce the used oil generated by one car by 6 gallons a year. There are about 300 million cars registered in the US today.  It’s easy to see that moving to extended drain intervals and quality synthetic oil could save millions of gallons of waste oil per year in the US alone.

In conclusion, synthetic oil can claim to be more eco-friendly simply because it gives us a way to greatly reduce amount of used oil we generate.

Reduce Dependency on Foreign Oil

Another side effect of extended drain intervals would be the reduced demand for foreign oil. We’ve shown it would be easy to reduce US oil consumption by 600 million to 1.2 billion (or more) gallons of oil per year. Taking that amount of oil out of the demand market in the US would mean we would have to import that much less.

Synthetic oils are not derived from crude petroleum, but rather are synthesized and artificially created. If they are dumped down the drain after use in an automobile, they can be just as harmful to the environment as conventional oil. The difference, then, is their longevity and method of creation.

Because they are not pulled out of the earth and refined industrially, they begin their life without having any initial environmental impact. And because they improve engine performance, increase gas mileage, and offer extended oil drain capability–meaning synthetic oil doesn’t have to be changed as often–they reduce the environmental impact even further. Thus, it is not that they necessarily possess inherent “green” qualities. Their creation and use provides a reduced footprint, quite a bit less than conventional oil.

Low Ash oil for a Diesel? Why?

I have had questions about low ash oil for diesels. 

While ash content is now limited on 2007 and newer diesels, it was not in previous times. In fact ash content relates directly to the level of ZDDP, anti wear and TBN additive content/level. Higher ash oils are better able to provide wear protection and raise the TBN number to allow the oil to be safely used for a longer time. Older, traditional AMSOIL diesel oils, AME and PCO have an ash content of about 1.4%and a TBN of 12+, while the new DEO and DME have an ash content of less than 1% and a TBN of 10.

The old Detroit Diesel 2 cycle engines, like the 6V-72 and others having a “V” in their designation, called for low ash oil (below 1%). In that case the new DEO and/or DME would be preferred.
