Amsoil

Amsoil synthetic oil works better in extreme cold. Extreme cold can cause conventional motor oil, transmission fluid and gear lube to thicken, starving vital moving parts of necessary lubrication. In many cases, thick motor oil will prevent vehicles from starting. Cold, thick transmission fluid results in delayed or sluggish shifts and inadequate protection for bearings, valves and other critical parts. Thick gear lube, meanwhile, requires more energy to turn the gears, reducing fuel efficiency. Because gears and bearings in the axle housing are splash-lubricated, conventional gear lubes that are too thick at cold temperatures can starve internal components of lubrication, which can cause excessive wear and premature failure.
Conventional petroleum lubricants thicken because they often contain paraffin (wax). While modern refining techniques remove most of the wax from petroleum oil, some wax-like molecules remain. These wax-like molecules are soluble at ambient temperatures above freezing, but crystallize into a honeycomb-like structure at lower temperatures and cause circulation problems. At startup, this can leave working parts unprotected while the lubricant warms to a temperature that allows it to flow. amsoil synthetic lubricants do not contain paraffin. Amsoil synthetic oils provide outstanding low-temperature fluidity for fast, dependable winter starts; quick, responsive shifts and immediate startup protection. Superior Amsoil Fuel & Coolant Additives and Amsoil Diesel applications can be especially sensitive to cold-weather issues. As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form
crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting. While low-quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F, most fuels have a cloud point near 32°F. The point at which the wax crystals clog the fuel filter is known as the cold filter-plugging point (CFPP). amsoil Cold Flow Improver reduces the CFPP of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel by as much as 20ºF for increased protection. In frigid conditions, motorists often idle vehicles for extended periods to warm the interiors and defrost the windows. Not only can the practice be inconvenient, it wastes fuel as well. amsoil Dominator® Coolant Boost uses proprietary tiered-surfactant technology to provide quick and effective heat transfer inside radiator and cylinder heads, resulting in faster engine warm-up times. As a result, vehicle interiors warm more quickly and the defroster becomes effective sooner. Amsoil diesel fuel additive. Amsoil antifreeze. Amsoil fuel addetive.

Direct Jobber Craig Hamrick of Macomb, Ill. has been a firefighter in charge of fleet maintenance for 23 years. “My wife and I have been Dealers since 2006 and became Dealers after seeing the impressive results AMSOIL demonstrated in the fire department fleet,” Hamrick said. The fire department is a commercial account of Dealer Glenn Mike Arnold, Hamrick’s sponsor. “We have used Amsoil lubricants since 2003 in the fleet,” Hamrick said. The department has 11 vehicles and numerous small engines and generators, all running with Amsoil products. “Glenn’s knowledge of Amsoil products has helped us select the right products for our needs. Every vehicle in our fleet has AMSOIL installed from front to back.” AMSOIL Powers Generator The Macomb Fire Department generator at the main station is an Onan 150KW unit that is powered by a Cummins QSB 6.7 liter diesel. The generator is equipped with an AMSOIL Duel Remote By-Pass System and Ea Full-Flow and By-Pass Filters. For ease of oil sampling, there is a petcock on one of the ports on the filter housing. The engine is filled with AMSOIL  premium API CJ-4 5W-40 Synthetic Diesel Oil (DEO). “The reason for choosing Premium 5W-40 over AMSOIL Premium 15W-40 Synthetic Diesel Oil (DME) is the slightly better flow characteristics of the 5W-40 for cold-weather startup,” Hamrick said. “While this unit has a block heater to keep the coolant warm, the oil can still be fairly cold. This generator must go from stopped to running with full electrical load in less than one minute. The cold flow characteristics of AMSOIL diesel oil provide maximum protection and peace of mind for me and our department.”

The fuel is also treated with AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow Improver at each fill-up. “The savings are substantial,” Hamrick said. “We only change oil based on oil analysis now, where before we changed every three months or 250 hours. Fleet uptime is one of the most important benefits for us.  Our equipment must respond and perform at maximum capability every time. The generator is just as important.” Oil Analysis Proves AMSOIL Benefits. Hamrick said he was a skeptic of extended drain intervals when he first was approached about AMSOIL synthetics. However, he soon learned the saving potential of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants. The department saves money through the reduction of waste oil generated, as well as fewer costs for equipment repairs and services, both in time and labor.

The department regularly sends oil samples to OIL ANALYZERS as part of its maintenance program. “The proof is in all of the oil analysis reports,” he said. “We can see by the results.” AMSOIL lubricants are especially well-suited to emergency service vehicles where every second counts. “You never know when you’re going to get that call, and there isn’t a lot of extra equipment available,” Hamrick said. “We need our equipment to be ready and able to perform.”
Even during the winter months, the generator has “instant oil pressure” when it’s fired up, he said. “If you walk into
our station all you will see in our maintenance room is AMSOIL products.” Growing His Own AMSOIL Business
Hamrick specializes in commercial accounts because his background is in heavy-duty diesel equipment. Name recognition of AMSOIL has improved in the years since he became a Dealer. “AMSOIL is easier to sell now
than even when I started as a Dealer,” Hamrick said. He credited AMSOIL INC. for its work building AMSOIL brand recognition in numerous markets. His experience with the products also helps him with other fleet managers as he tells them his first-hand experience of AMSOIL cost savings, equipment performance and longevity. “It’s all about saving money and extending the life of the equipment,” Hamrick said.

Amsoil diesel Plus Cold Flow Improver is formulated with excellent detergency properties to help keep injectors, rings, piston crowns and the fuel pump lubricated, plus lowers the cold flow filter plugging point (CFPP) by as much as 34 F (19 C) in ultra-low sulfur diesel.
Total system cleaner and lubricity improver for all types of diesel engines. Improves performance and longevity of diesel engines while reducing deposits, black smoke and emissions. Improves fuel economy by cleaning dirty injectors. Restores horsepower. Designed for heavy-duty diesel engines.

RECOMMENDATIONS
One 16-oz. bottle of AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver treats 40 gallons of fuel. Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver will show no signs of solidifying in its concentrated state in the bottle until the temperature reaches -22°F (-30°C). It will only freeze in its concentrated state, and AMSOIL recommends storing it at temperatures above 0°F (-18°C). If Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is allowed to freeze in the bottle it can be thawed and used. When mixed with diesel fuel, Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver effectively improves diesel fuel cold-temperature properties. It is important to treat fuel before it has reached its cloud point as Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver will not dissolve wax crystals which have already formed in the fuel.

AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver meets federal regulations for ULSD fuel. It complies with federal low-sulfur content requirements for use in diesel motor vehicles and non-road engines. While Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is formulated specifically for ULSD fuel, it also performs well with non-ULSD fuels, including biodiesel.

AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is specifically formulated to improve the lubrication of fuel system components, improve fuel flow, help maintain fuel integrity and prevent the fuel filter and injectors from clogging. Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is recommended for diesel-powered vehicles, home heating oil and kerosene heating systems.

SUPERIOR COLD-WEATHER PERFORMANCE
As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting. While low quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F (4°C), most fuels have a cloud point near 32°F (0°C). The point at which the wax crystals clog the fuel filter is known as the cold filter-plugging point (CFPP). AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver lowers the CFPP by as much as 34°F (19°C) in ULSD.

It also reduces the pour-point temperature of treated diesel fuel, providing better fuel delivery to the injectors during cold weather. It is formulated with a jet-fuel-type deicer that disperses water to control ice formation in all sections of the fuel system. Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for the use of #1 diesel fuel, enabling better fuel economy, performance and lubricity.

POUR POINT VS. CFPP
It is important to distinguish between CFPP and pour point. Many competitors make great claims regarding pour point, leading consumers to believe their products are superior when they actually have an inferior CFPP. Once fuel surpasses its cloud point, the wax crystals begin to clog the fuel filter. The CFPP temperature is a more important characteristic than pour point because the engine will not run if fuel cannot pass through the fuel filter.

REDUCED NEED FOR #1 DIESEL FUEL
One traditional solution to cold weather problems in diesel engines is the use of #1 diesel fuel, which is diesel fuel diluted with kerosene. While #1 diesel fuel has an advantage in low-temperature operability, there are also several disadvantages. The energy content of #1 diesel fuel is about 95 percent of that of #2 diesel fuel, resulting in reduced fuel economy and less horsepower. In addition, the kerosene used in #1 diesel fuel provides less lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel distributor, increasing the likelihood for wear on these critical components. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for blending standard #2 diesel fuel with lower-quality #1 diesel fuel, helping to maintain fuel economy and keep engines functioning normally.

Amsoil Equipped Motorcycles Shine In Fuel Economy Challenge

Amsoil

AMSOIL synthetic lubricants figured prominently in the Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge held May 13 in northern California, where a diesel-powered motorcycle using Amsoil products won by achieving 128.24 mpg. Many of the other bikes also relied on Amsoil products to help achieve results nearly as impressive.

Amsoil

Winning driver Fred Hayes of Hayes Diversified Technologies (Hayes-DT) completed the challenge riding the company’s MD670 F2 diesel-powered motorcycle (pictured above). Hayes bested the next closest competitor by over 18mpg using biodiesel fuel, a lightweight motorcycle design (370 pounds dry) and Amsoil synthetic lubricants throughout.

  • Engine and Transmission – Series 3000 5W-30 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil
  • Cooling System – Antifreeze and Engine Coolant, Dominator© Coolant Boost
  • Chassis – Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease
  • Chain – MP Heavy Duty Metal Protector
  • Forks – Shock Therapy© Suspension Fluid #10 Medium
  • Fuel – Diesel Concentrate

Competitors completed a 133.5-mile course designed to provide real-world, challenging conditions. The trip, beginning and ending in Carmel, Calif.,

included mountainous terrain cresting a 2,500-foot pass, while the return ride along the famous El Camino Real subjected riders to 30 mph headwinds that tested the limits of each motorcycle’s fuel efficiency. Held at various places throughout the country, the Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge dates to 1980 and aims to encourage development of motorcycle technologies that improve fuel economy while remaining viable for everyday drivers.

The winner must consume the least amount of fuel measured in dollars and cents while meeting all prescribed conditions. Hayes used $4.53 in biodiesel, essentially one gallon, to travel the entire 133.5 miles in challenging conditions, highlighting the bike’s impressive technology and the effectiveness of AMSOIL products. Hayes said his bike showed measurable improvements running Series 3000 5W-30 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil and Diesel Concentrate, including easier shifting from the transmission. Competitors had to remain ahead of trailing official at all times to prevent them from padding fuel economy statistics by driving slowly. Two bikes were disqualified for doing so.

AMSOIL-sponsored Hayes-DT focuses on developing the world’s most cutting-edge, heavy-fuel-powered, light tactical vehicles and small engines for military use.

In fact, key Hayes-DT corporate personnel have served in modern military conflicts deployed on Hayes-DT military motorcycles. The bikes receive the most use from the Combat Military Police for rout recognizance and convoy control.

Hayes-DT Street Fighter bike

The Hayes-DT Street Fighter bike achieved 90.82 mpg running biodiesel and AMSOIL lubricants throughout

A second Hayes-DT bike, the Street Fighter, was disqualified after a battery problem caused it to miss the official start. Following repairs, driver Josh Chen rallied to complete the course anyway, achieving 90.82 mpg, which would have been good enough for third place. The Street Fighter used the same lineup of AMSOIL products as the MD670 F2. Although neither motorcycle is available to the general public yet, Hayes-DT is currently working on EPA and EU emissions certification. Until then, competitions like the Vetter Fuel Economy Challenger allow Hayes-DT to showcase the advanced technologies of their bikes and the performance benefits of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants and additives.
