After a successful 2011 campaign that brought off-road racing to three new venues, the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL has set the course for 2012.

The seven weekend, 14-race season will start where it ended in 2011.  A purpose-built track at Cycle Ranch in Floresville, Texas will host the first two rounds of racing April 28-29.  Just 30-minutes from downtown San Antonio, Cycle Ranch offered up one of the most technical race tracks on the circuit this past season.

A return to Red Bud MX in Buchanan, Mich. is on tap for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, May 26-27.  Despite heavy rains and knee-deep mud, the Red Bud faithful saw some of the most extreme off-road racing this year as the TORC series started at the famed motocross facility.

Big market, NASCAR venues in Chicago and Charlotte are mid-season highlights for the premier off-road, short course series.  TORC invades NASCAR country July 13-14 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. it will be a quick turnaround for the teams less than one week later in Joliet, Ill. at Chicagoland Speedway for a Thursday-Friday event.

Historical venues Crandon International Raceway and Bark River International Raceway round out the new schedule.  The series returns to its traditional ending in Crandon, Wis. on Labor Day weekend.  The final race of the year will be the AMSOIL Cup on Sunday, September 2.

To determine the fuel economy benefits of its synthetic lubricants, Amsoil conducted the industry-standard SAE J1321 In-Service Fuel Economy Test Procedure.
First, the baseline rate of fuel consumption was determined for two nearly identical Kenworth® T800B diesel trucks and 53’ trailers from Ford® Motor Company’s* Rawsonville, MI fleet. Texaco brand conventional lubricants were installed in each vehicle’s engine, transmission, and front and rear differentials. Both trucks simultaneously completed runs on a 40-mile test route representative of real-world driving conditions beginning and ending at Ford’s Rawsonville fleet maintenance facility.
Fuel consumption was recorded from each vehicle’s engine control module (ECM)
following each run. Although both vehicles were operated using the same conventional
lubricants and according to the same procedures, the test truck consumed an average
of 0.37 more gallons of fuel per run compared to the control truck.

The test truck alone was then thoroughly flushed of its conventional lubricants prior to
installing AMSOIL synthetic lubricants. Both trucks simultaneously completed runs on
the test route according to the same procedures used during the baseline segment. Fuel
consumption data was again recorded from the ECMs. The switch to AMSOIL synthetic
lubricants eliminated the 0.37-gallon difference in fuel consumption per baseline
segment run, resulting in 6.54 percent improved fuel economy.

Family Handyman Magazine had a short tip on the 4 Big Synthetic Oil Myths. www.familyhandyman.com

The big four myths listed were;

  1. You have to flush the engine before you can run synthetic oil in it. FALSE. You should NEVER flush your engine. All carmakers warn against this practice. (editorial comment; this is the one reaction we disagree with)
  2. Synthetic oil causes leaks. FALSE. This was true 25 years ago. Not anymore. Current formulations contain seal conditioners to prevent leaks.
  3. Once you switch to synthetic, you can’t go back to regular oil. FALSE. No truth whatsoever to this one.
  4. Since synthetic oil flows better when cold, I can ignore the manufacturer’s recommendations for 5W- 20 and use 10W-30. FALSE. Heavier weight oil reduces fuel efficiency and can mess up valve timing mechanisms. Stick with the manufacturer’s oil weight recommendations.

In general, Family Handyman gets it straight on these tips. These have each been a long standing myth so it’s good to get a major magazine to clear the air. We agree with their reaction to tips 2,3, and 4.

Installing new oil or transmission fluid into a dirty vehicle may not be enough to remove deposits and increase efficiency. The detergents and dispersants in some lubricants may not be able to handle leftover sludge and deposits, and the new lubricant soon becomes unfit for service, accelerating the formation of even more harmful deposits. Applications

Directions for Use
Though it works in one treatment, AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush is safe enough to be used at every oil change. If using a flushing machine, follow the manufacturer’s recommendation. Otherwise, use the following guidelines:

Engine: Add 16 oz. bottle of AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush to engine oil fill port. Idle the engine for 10-15 minutes, then immediately drain the oil. Ensure enough time for the system to completely
drain. Remove and replace the engine oil filter. Refill engine with new engine oil in the viscosity grade recommended by the manufacturer.

Transmission: Engage emergency brake. Add 16 oz. bottle of AMSOIL Engine Flush to transmission oil fill port. Idle for 10-15 minutes; shift through drive and reverse. Do NOT place vehicle under heavy load. Drain entire transmission and torque converter of fluid. FILTER MUST BE CHANGED prior to refilling with new transmission fluid.

NOTE: It is not recommended to flush transmissions that do not have a removable pan or access to the transmission filter.

Amsoil synthetic oil works better in extreme cold. Extreme cold can cause conventional motor oil, transmission fluid and gear lube to thicken, starving vital moving parts of necessary lubrication. In many cases, thick motor oil will prevent vehicles from starting. Cold, thick transmission fluid results in delayed or sluggish shifts and inadequate protection for bearings, valves and other critical parts. Thick gear lube, meanwhile, requires more energy to turn the gears, reducing fuel efficiency. Because gears and bearings in the axle housing are splash-lubricated, conventional gear lubes that are too thick at cold temperatures can starve internal components of lubrication, which can cause excessive wear and premature failure.
Conventional petroleum lubricants thicken because they often contain paraffin (wax). While modern refining techniques remove most of the wax from petroleum oil, some wax-like molecules remain. These wax-like molecules are soluble at ambient temperatures above freezing, but crystallize into a honeycomb-like structure at lower temperatures and cause circulation problems. At startup, this can leave working parts unprotected while the lubricant warms to a temperature that allows it to flow. amsoil synthetic lubricants do not contain paraffin. Amsoil synthetic oils provide outstanding low-temperature fluidity for fast, dependable winter starts; quick, responsive shifts and immediate startup protection. As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form
crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting. While low-quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F, most fuels have a cloud point near 32°F. The Top Truck Challenge was established 19 years ago, and has been steadfast in keeping with the original idea of pushing 4×4’s to their ultimate limits in Hollister Hills, CA. The Top Truck Challenge is a grueling week-long competition that tests the mettle of some of the toughest trucks and drivers in the country. AMSOIL has been the Official Oil of the Top Truck Challenge for several years, which provides an excellent proving ground to show what AMSOIL lubricants are capable of handling.

Bryce Menzies Wins Baja 500 | Amsoil.

As a contender in the Traxxas TORC Series presented by Amsoil Pro 2wd class, Bryce Menzies has an easy time focusing on the chaos that surrounds short course racing.  But it’s the uncontrollable chaos of desert racing that fuels the Red Bull/Amsoil driver, and the Las Vegas native determined to that 2011 was his year to tame Baja.

A group of the top off-road desert racers rolled off the start of the Baja 500 early Saturday morning.  Menzies, along with co-driver Peter Mortenson, was first off the line and led the prestigous race wire-to-wire.  The duo enjoyed clean air in their Trophy Truck and as the cruised to the overall win Saturday evening.  By the end of the race, they had won the event by more than 12 minutes.

Up next for Menzies Motorsports, which also includes Pro 4×4 driver Ricky Johnson and Pro Lite driver Luke Johnson, will be at the TORC race in Crandon, Wis. June 18-19.

Wednesday was the second day of the Top Truck Challenge, and it didn’t go without a hitch. Competitors were introduced to the Obstacle Course, Hill Climb and Mini Rubicon events. AMSOIL Technical Powersports Manager Len Groom provided us with another update straight from Hollister Hills, and reports this years’ event isn’t holding back any punches. Judging by the pictures, these rigs are facing some extreme obstacles as they make their way to through each event and try to remain in the competition.

The Obstacle Course held plenty of surprises for competitors as they attempted to clear it. Deep water and deeper holes proved this to be extremely difficult, catching some of the drivers on the ledge causing them to roll. Despite the challenges the competitors faced, most made it through to face the next challenge-the Hill Climb event.

The Hill Climb is a 60° slope with holes and ditches dug throughout, aimed at either flipping the rigs over or stopping them completely. There is no stopping or backing up in the Hill Climb event, momentum must be maintained while dodging the treacherous terrain at the same time.  On a hill that’s difficult to even stand on, let alone drive, most drivers were able to clear it, though there were a couple of rollovers.

Up next we saw the Mini Rubicon, one of the most challenging events in the Top Truck Challenge. The proving ground for this event was bigger than in years past, and producers made sure it wouldn’t be easy. In addition to deep holes, giant boulders were placed throughout to ensure some broken parts at the end of the day. In spite of all the hurdles, the Mini Rubicon didn’t take out any competitors and they were all able to move on to the dreaded Tank Trap on Thursday.

Top Truck Challenge Day 1: Tow Test, Frame Twister & Mud Pit

We just got a report from AMSOIL Powersports Technical Product Manager Len Groom, who is live on the scene of the 2011 Top Truck Challenge in Hollister Hills, CA. The challenge kicked off Tuesday with the competitors being introduced to the 2011 event by the Tow Test, Mud Pit and Frame Twister. While the Tow Test claimed only a broken driveshaft on a buggy, the Frame Twister lived up to its name and kept most competitors from even finishing.  The Frame Twister event is a brutal proving ground filled with holes, rocks and logs aimed at taking out these monstrous trucks with little effort. Len Groom reported that is was the most demanding Frame Twister yet and summed up what has been seen so far in one word: Tough.

After numerous extractions and broken parts in the Frame Twister, the challenge moved on to the Mud Pit event. These rigs don’t typically do well in this type of sludge but competitor Mike Keller hit the mud flying and skimmed along the top, making it look easy. We are now in Day 2 of the 2011 Top Truck Challenge, which will see the competitors battle the Obstacle Course, Hill Climb and Mini Rubicon. Judging by the photos we have received thus far, things are just getting good.

AMSOIL Monster Trucks Compete in Toronto

All four AMSOIL/Sudden Impact Racing monster trucks – AMSOIL Shock Therapy, AMSOIL Excaliber, Redcat Racing Ground Pounder and Michigan Ice Monster – competed at the Skydome in Toronto, Ontario for a weekend of intense competition. After the racing competition saw a spectacular end-over-end flip from Michigan Ice Monster and a semi-final appearance from AMSOIL Shock Therapy, the freestyle competition featured great runs by Redcat Racing Ground Pounder and AMSOIL Excaliber before AMSOIL Shock Therapy hit the track and quickly took the lead with a dizzying set of donuts, massive air, huge cross threads and a few slap wheelies. The trucks impressed the crowd once again on the second night, with both Redcat Racing Ground Pounder and AMSOIL Shock Therapy taking early freestyle leads before each suffered broken spindles.
